Chapter thirteen

Bat Swarm

Pluck arrow, aim, nock and loose. Judge flight and where everyone else was firing while drawing another arrow, verifying by feel and sight of the feathers what kind it is. Shift to target a new attacker even as you draw and loose. Conjure an arrow next, pulling energy and reshaping it on the fly so that it’s a Splitting Arrow rather than a basic one.

Aim, draw, loose.

Repeat ad nauseam, with occasional interruptions from Sarah wanting him to conjure her more exploding or splitting spears whenever his cooldown was over – and boy, did she have the timing of that down to the second – along with keeping an eye on the team.

Of the group, the most useless right now was Keeley. She had few useful long-range attacks, and no real ability with the bow and arrow. Lance did not even suggest she look into it – prior experience with the young lady when she attended practice sessions with Matt had shown she had a negative ability level.

She seemed to be playing with her Celestial Concentration, wielding the ball of light at their opponents and shaping it in the air. It went from a point of illumination to a spotlight-like cone, which she pointed at man-bats. Each group she caught in the light shied away, their overly large eyes squinting. Some went so far as to stop flapping, holding a wing-arm in front of their faces and falling.

“Good job, love!” Matt cried. “Crowd control is amazing as usual!”

“If Yanesh was here, he’d be gagging,” Lance muttered.

“Bah! That virgin?” Matt snorted. “He doesn’t understand true romance.”

“More killing, less romancing!” Sarah snapped, catching her spear as it was dragged back. She set her foot on the body that it had pulled along, ripped the spear out and then moved to throw again. For a second, she regarded the swarm before them before she cast it forward. The spear flew through the air trailing blood, then punched through the upper body of the man-bat she had aimed for, continued through, and arced down to enter the belly of another monster.

“Yes! Two in one.” Sarah threw her hands up gleefully, then gestured. The spear, unable to detach itself from two bodies and its return enchantment overburdened, refused to come back, instead twitching futilely. “Oh shit. Spear, spear, spear, Lance!”

“One. Second.” Lance drew and fired, turning and aiming at one of the man-bats. Too late. It unleashed the scream it had been building, dropping him and the whole team except for Sarah to the ground. At close range, the attack was enough to leave them whimpering, allowing the remaining man-bats to swarm them.

“Paper cuts on the vagina!” Sarah cursed, hopping forward and punching the first man-bat to approach them. She sent it spinning backward, fragile facial bones crunching satisfyingly under her fist. Landing lightly on the rocky ground, she kicked out with a foot, sending another man-bat tumbling before bounding over to grab the next.

For all her fury, though, for every monster she managed to ward off, another two reached the stricken team.
